October has arrived, which means pumpkins are appearing on porches, skeletons are hanging from trees, and perfectly normal people are paying money to walk through haunted houses.
Seriously. We’re paying people to scare us now?
Welcome to spooky season!
At Papermoon Parcels, we love a good mystery, a creepy setting, and a story that makes you wonder what might be lurking around the next corner.
But we’ve noticed something about the characters in scary stories.
They make some TERRIBLE decisions.
So, in the spirit of Halloween, we’ve created a survival guide to help you avoid becoming the main character in your very own horror story.
You’re welcome.
Rule #1: Never Investigate a Strange Noise Alone
You’re home alone. It’s dark. You’re watching a movie when you hear something crash upstairs.
What do you do?
A. Turn on every light in the house.
B. Call someone.
C. Grab a flashlight, whisper “Hello?” and slowly climb the stairs.
If you chose C, congratulations! You’ve just volunteered to be the first person who disappears.
Seriously, why do people in scary stories always announce their presence?
“Hello? Is somebody there?”
Yes. Probably. And they weren’t expecting company.
Rule #2: If a Door Is Locked, Leave It Locked
Imagine you’re exploring an old mansion when you discover a mysterious door at the end of a hallway.
It’s covered in scratches. There’s a strange smell coming from underneath it. Someone has written DO NOT OPEN across the wood.
Naturally, your friend says, “I wonder what’s inside?”
No.
Absolutely not.
There’s a reason that door is locked, and we are perfectly happy never finding out what it is.
Unless, of course, there’s a really good mystery involved.
Then we might need to reconsider.
But we’re bringing snacks, flashlights, and at least six friends.
Rule #3: Never Trust a Doll That Moves by Itself
Dolls are supposed to sit quietly on shelves.
That’s it. That’s their entire job.
If you place a doll on a chair and return five minutes later to find it standing in the hallway, you have a problem.
If its head turns to follow you?
Bigger problem.
If it whispers your name?
We’re moving.
The doll can keep the house.
Rule #4: When the Carnival Appears Overnight, Ask Questions
Picture this.
Yesterday, the field at the edge of town was empty.
Today, there’s an entire carnival.
Bright lights. Music. Games. A Ferris wheel that seems to disappear into the clouds.
And the strangest part?
Nobody remembers seeing it arrive.
Would you go?
Of course you would!
Because mysterious carnivals are AMAZING.
Just remember to read the signs before climbing onto any rides.
Especially if the sign says something like, “One ride. One chance. No refunds.”
Actually, maybe skip that one.
Rule #5: Never Say, “I’ll Be Right Back”
This might be the most important rule of all.
In the history of scary stories, has anyone ever said, “I’ll be right back,” and returned without something terrible happening?
We haven’t done the research, but we’re guessing the odds aren’t great.
If your group of friends decides to split up in a creepy forest, abandoned building, or underground tunnel, politely decline.
Stick together.
There’s safety in numbers.
And if something starts chasing you, remember that you don’t have to outrun the monster.
Wait.
Actually, that’s terrible advice.
Just RUN!
Rule #6: Beware of the Words “It’s Probably Nothing”
A shadow moves across the window.
“It’s probably nothing.”
Footsteps echo from an empty room.
“It’s probably nothing.”
A mysterious figure appears at the end of the hallway, vanishes, and leaves behind a trail of muddy footprints.
“It’s probably nothing.”
At what point do we admit that something is definitely SOMETHING?
We suggest immediately.
But Here’s the Real Secret About Spooky Stories…
We love them because they’re exciting!
There’s something wonderful about exploring a haunted mansion, solving a mystery, or discovering what happens when ordinary kids find themselves in extraordinary situations.
And the best part?
You get to experience all the chills, thrills, and surprises from the safety of your favorite reading spot.
No actual monsters required.
At Papermoon Parcels, we believe spooky stories should be filled with imagination, adventure, mystery, and just enough goosebumps to keep you turning the pages.
Because being scared can be fun.
Especially when you know you can close the book.
Although…
Was that your bedroom door creaking?
Probably nothing.
Happy Spooky Season from Papermoon Parcels! 👻📚
P.S. We have one final survival tip: If your reflection ever waves at you when you’re standing perfectly still, don’t wave back.
Your turn!
Which spooky-story mistake would YOU be most likely to make?
Would you open the mysterious door, investigate the strange noise, or climb aboard the creepy carnival ride?
We won’t judge.
Much.
